Dietary fiber is one of the most commonly deficient components to the American diet. Daily fiber recommendations for males and females are roughly 40grams to 30grams respectively. A more precise recommendation is 14grams per 1000 calories. These figures reflect the USDA’s recommendations for ADI (adequate daily intake).

Many body systems receive benefit from adequate daily fiber.  These include but are not limited to; cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and metabolic health.

Fiber is classified into 2 different types: soluble and insoluble.  Certain types of soluble fiber like resistant fiber and starches are metabolized by gut microbes causing fermentation and benefiting beneficial bacteria. Insoluble fiber passes through the digestive track undigested, which can act as a sweeper and cleaning the colon while also adding bulk to the stool.
